30 Days of Self Care Series

Day #22 • Light a Candle

For me, a candle is like a light switch. Not because it gives off a teeny bit of light, but because it instantly changes the room. For example, you can go from messy house to chill messy house, just by lighting a candle. 😉 Plus, candles just make your home feel cozier. Lighting a candle, throwing on your favorite PJs, and curling up with a good book and some tea sounds like the epitome of self care.

Maybe your version of self care is lighting a candle, sinking into a warm bath, and listening to gentle instrumental music while you let the stress of the week wash off of you. Or maybe it’s lighting a candle, sipping on your favorite wine, and catching up on Grey’s Anatomy.

Candles are so versatile! You can use them for a variety of self care needs.

Increase your focus

Scents like mint, lemon, orange, and rosemary can stimulate your mind.

Improve your mood.

Burn candles with uplifting citrus notes, like lemon and orange.

Relieve Stress.

Take a deep breath and light a candle with lavender or bergamot.

Sleep better.

An hour before bed, use aromas of chamomile and lavender to prepare your mind and space for sleep. (Just don’t forget to blow it out before you hit the bed!)

Invoke a happy memory.

Smells of the beach or a campfire can transport you to another place and time for a moment of joy.

So, today I want to encourage you to light a candle. If you’re anything like me, you probably have some spare candles sitting on random tables and shelves in your house. Go on a scavenger hunt if you need to. But pull one out and light up, babe.

If your house is somehow not stuffed with various candles, there’s plenty of places to shop for them! Check out Penn & Beech, located in Indianapolis, an all-natural candle company specializing in natural soy waxes. You can even customize your candle with dozens of scent options for creating your own signature smell. (I made a Bacon & Baked Bread candle that gave the perfect warm and toasty feeling I wanted for winter, without the usual Christmas vibes!)

Or, if you’re looking for a DIY project, check out how you can make your own candles at home! Not only will you end up with a gorgeous new candle, but you’ll feel accomplished and honestly like a badass for creating something so beautiful with your bare hands.

What’s your favorite candle scent?

Mine’s toasted marshmallow by Bath & Bodyworks.  We’re sharing links to our favorites in our group!
