30 Days of Self Care Series

Day #9 • Wash Your Sheets

This one may not seem like a self-care practice at first. I mean, this is basically just a chore. BUT, washing your sheets has a number of health benefits, most prominently your personal hygiene (gross, I know, but we all definitely need to know this!!).

Having freshly laundered sheets can also boost your mood, helping you have a better night’s sleep, plus a freshly made bed looks soooo inviting and warm. Need some tips on how to wash your sheets for best results? Check this out!

If you happen to live someplace where you can have a clothesline, hanging your clothes out to dry is a wonderful option. You’ll save some money on your electricity bill by not running your dryer, the smell is incredible, PLUS the sun can help kill off any of those pesky bacteria still remaining on your sheets!

Now that the sheets are clean, let’s make them luxurious and the place you (and your SO) want to be. If you’re the type of gal who has trouble falling asleep at night, try using a lavender linen spray, like this one from Mrs. Meyers. Or to set the mood for love, spray rosewater on your sheets for a sweet, romantic night. You can even make your own!

Sheets are an important part of my job at the studio.

I pretty much always have a client wrapped up in a clean, white sheet on our bed set and I put a lot of thought into the design of our studio to provide clients with an environment that feels comfortable and empowering.  To me, the sheet set eliminates everything that distracts from the real you.  It’s timeless and my favorite way to capture my clients.

My goal is to create images that highlight each client’s authentic beauty and personality while communicating confidence and strength. I coach everyone I photograph on body-language and posing to communicate a collection of final images to choose from when ordering products. Fun, flirty, feisty….we tap into a variety of moods.

But what if you want to roll around in the sheets at home and tap into that confidence?  Lucky girl. I’ve got a ton of pro tips for wrapping yourself in a sheet and playing around once in a while at home.

Mood matters

Light some candles. Put on your favorite sexy-time music. Lower the lights.  Create an environment that gets you in the mood.  You know yourself best, so have fun with it!

Shower & shave (if that’s your thing) before sliding in the sheets.

Trust me.  Smooth, clean skin under fresh, clean sheets is a feeling you’ll get addicted to.  Take it the extra step an moisturize your skin and you’ll feel like an absolute goddess.

Let your hair down.

“Letting your hair down” is synonymous with being free and enjoying yourself.  The simple act of letting your hair be free before you hop in the sheets can have a way of seeping into your subconscious and giving you more confidence.  You should give it a try!

Wear something sexy (or nothing at all).

Sexy is subjective.  The goal here is to tap into what makes YOU feel sexy.  Something silky? Shorts and a tank?  An amazing bra and panty set you’ve been saving for a date night?  A button down shirt with nothing underneath?  If all else falls short, you can always skip the fuss and go in your birthday suit.

Don’t over think it.

Any time I get to talk to a recipient of a gifted set of images I captured, I always ask which images were their faves.   Natural smiles, candid moments and connected eye contact to the camera are almost always at the top of the list.   Your significant other loves you for you, so embrace that.
