Boudoir Planning & Tips

10 common excuses boudoir photographers hear

We’ve made a list of the 10 excuses we hear every day, and what we think of them. How many of your “buts” made the list? Did we change your mind? Even just a little?

1. I need to lose weight first.

You don’t need to lose weight. You need to hire the right photographer.

I’m not trying to discourage you from committing to a weight loss journey, if it’s for your health and emotional wellbeing. However, if you hire a professional photographer that is skilled in lighting, choosing the right lens, and posing you to enhance your best features, you will walk away with the best photos ever taken of yourself—without losing a single pound.

Lucky for you, I have spent over a decade perfecting these skills, and my studio is set up for posing women of any shape or size.

2. I don’t want my pictures online for other people to see.

We never post photos without written permission from our clients.

After your shoot we’ll ask you if you would like to sign a model release, which states that UNVEILED can share your photos on social media, our website and in sample products.  If you do opt-in, we do not tag you or use your name in our posts when we use your photos to encourage women who are thinking of booking a shoot of their own. It’s likely you saw other women’s photos and felt inspired in the same way. Your photos are a testimonial to the UNVEILED experience.

If you don’t sign the model release, your photos are marked top secret and are stored safely in our image vault.  You have our word.

3. I’m too old.

You’re never too old to feel beautiful. In our opinion, the more years you’ve lived, the more you have to celebrate. As women get older, we learn to embrace who we are through the life lessons of our 20s, 30s, 40s, and so on. The older you are, the more you are nodding your head and reading this right now going, “mmm hmm.”

4. I’m not photogenic.

Once again, you haven’t worked with the right photographer.

Do you ever take a selfie on your phone and you think it’s going to be REAL good, until you look at it? Or worse, do you ever forget to reverse the camera back to front facing? Then the next time you turn on your phone, there you are, staring at yourself completely startled and off guard? Am I the only one who does that?

If these are the only kinds of photos you’re capturing of yourself, it’s easy to think you aren’t very photogenic. When was the last time you got completely glammed up and had someone else take dozens of photos documenting you at your very best?

Some of my favorite women to photograph are the ones who say they aren’t photogenic. The first 10 minutes we spend time working through the poses and facial expressions so that you can loosen up and blossom into yourself with each photo after that. These are the women who benefit most from the UNVEILED experience. They come in a little camera shy, and leave feeling like a stunner.

5. I have nothing to wear.

If you don’t own lingerie, a boudoir shoot is the perfect excuse to treat yourself with some new pieces. We’ll even consult with you on the cuts and shapes of lingerie that best fit your body type, and give you advice on what to bring.

But I also encourage you to look at your whole closet, not just the panty drawer. A lot of sexy looks can be achieved with a baggy sweater, a button-down shirt, or your favorite dress. You can even look through your partner’s closet for a team jersey, a favorite hat, or a work uniform.

And if you still have nothing to wear, wear nothing!  Some of our favorite images we have captured are clients are wrapped in a classic white sheet.  We have our own collection of jewelry, props, and accessories for the finishing touches.

6. I have no one to give the photos to.

Give them to yourself. Keep them in a box or an album that you reference on days when you’re a hot mess. Look at them again when you’re 90 years old and say, “Damn, I looked good.” Frame them and hang them in your bachelorette pad. Smile when people come over and ask, “Is that you?!” Show your girlfriends. Show your ex. Post them on your own social media and eat up all the praise and glory. You deserve all of the above.

7. I don’t know how to be sexy.

I hear this a lot. Ironically, I hear it from some of the sexiest women I’ve ever photographed.

The biggest myth is that you have to be sultry or have a certain facial expression to be sexy. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. Sexy can be playful or innocent. A smile can be sexy. Even a big hearty laugh can be sexy. Sexy comes naturally when you feel at your best. Sexy is confidence, and we promise you’ll have it wrapped around your finger when we’re photographing you.

8. I’m not comfortable being naked in front of strangers.

Most people aren’t, which is why our studio has been strategically designed with this in mind.  A cozy robe and slippers are provided for you to wear during your spa-like experience at the studio along with a private dressing room.

When it comes time to shoot we will guide you through the poses as we photograph you.  We have had so many of our clients comment that because we provide them with direction at every stage of the process it helped melt away their nerves and ended up being very liberating!

9. I can’t afford it.

Can you really put a price on celebrating your unique beauty?

We don’t think so, but we get it….MONEY.  And a lot of women have blocks with spending money on something for themselves.  Because we want to make sure that this experience is attainable to everyone, we have incorporated a few options like our interest-free payment plan for your product order and our referral rewards program (check out the details here)!

We view our photo shoot experience as an act of self-care as we create gorgeous artwork with our clients to enjoy for years to come.  For some, this is a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience and others become repeat clients because the boost of self-confidence they get from their time at the studio is something they can’t live without!

Don’t forget that you deserve it.

10. What if I don’t like the photos?

After your shoot, you’ll leave for a couple of hours and come back for a same-day image reveal. We’ll sit down on the comfy couch in the studio lounge and enjoy the slideshow of retouched photos together.  We will guide you through the process of picking your favorites and build a package that you’re happy to keep forever.

Any photos you don’t like, you won’t buy. But it’s usually the other way around. 😉
